When the New England Patriots were given their punishment by Roger Goodell, he was quoted saying they were involved with “Conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL.” but Goodell has proven time and time again, that he doesn’t understand the definition of “integrity”.
In the words of Inigo Montoya, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
So in mid 2015, Defenders’ Co-Founder, Nate Kyng, started #PatriotsOfVirtue to show Goodell what integrity & virtue is all about. It started with Breast Cancer Awareness, then supporting our troops; mostly the areas that Goodell and the NFL fell short on. But as time would move on, Nate & the Defenders would continue to pursue virtuous ideals and help raise awareness, as well as harbor support for those in need.
The Defenders of the Wall would then become a supporter of #AutismSpeaks, as many of our members either have children or relatives with autism/asperger syndrome, and some of our most beloved members have it themselves.
Another campaign handled poorly and greedily by the NFL and Goodell, is #WarriorsOfCancer, honoring those we’ve lost and dedicating it to those who still battle it.
Yet another problem within the NFL, is Roger Goodell and 14 teams, including “America’s Team” the Dallas Cowboys, accepting money to honor the troops and our fallen soldiers.
And, #DefendTheWall’s founding father, Jerry Thornton, his son serves as a US Marine, and we’ve paid homage to the USMC in their recent birthday, this past November 10th, 2016.
Recently, the Defenders themselves became the point of ridicule and harassment by fellow fans, and many of us have personally had to deal with bullying most our lives. We live in this world where people will tell you to stop being so sensitive. Personally, I believe you should stop being so insensitive, and respect the feelings of others to the best of your abilities. We will not always agree and we’ll butt heads often, but bullying is defined as continuously and repeatedly engaging in targeted harassment of someone based on their skin color, their class, their preference, their religion and all else in between…Sometimes, simply being bigger than you, is enough reason for them to feel the need to put you down constantly, to make themselves feel powerful.
Bullying can lead to devastating aftermaths, such a suicide, and we here at the Defenders of the Wall, are pushing a campaign to follow the words of our trusted coach, Bill Belichick, in “ignoring the noise”, by empowering people and putting our foot down to defend victims of both bullying and cyber bullying. This world can be a cruel place, but in the words of Edmund Burke, “The only triumph of evil is for us good men and women to do nothing.” We are here to empower you, inspire you and defend you at all costs.
You are worth more than what’s hurting you inside and you are worth more than what people label you as.
We will continue to press forward, finding ways to aid our fellow man, to inspire them, uplift them, and let them know they are loved and genuinely cared for.
